Como Conquistar o Respeito

"Ninguém despreze a tua mocidade; pelo contrário, torna-te padrão... na palavra, no procedimento, no amor, na fé, na pureza". I Tim. 4:12. Muitos adultos acham difícil suportar o desprezo e o desdém de outros adultos, mas para um adolescente é duas vezes mais difícil suportar o desprezo e o desdém de seus companheiros da mesma idade. Um dia, quando Leo Buscaglia estava saindo da escola, uma gangue de arruaceiros o cercou e começou a crivá-lo de apelidos por causa de sua ascendência italiana. Humilhado e aos prantos, rompeu o círculo de seus atormentadores e correu para casa. Lá, trancou-se no banheiro e chorou amargamente. Seu pai o ouviu chorando e perguntou qual era o problema. Quando Leo contou o que havia acontecido, esperou que seu pai tomasse imediatas providências - ou que batesse nos desordeiros ou pelo menos reclamasse com os pais deles, exigindo que fossem castigados. Seu pai não fez nem uma coisa, nem outra. Em vez disso, começou a mencionar algumas coisas acerca dos italianos, das quais Leo podia orgulhar-se. Mas isso não acalmou o garoto. - Eu não gosto de ser diferente! - protestou ele. - Quero ser como todos os outros. - Como todos os outros? Você quer dizer que gostaria de ser como aqueles garotos que o insultaram? - perguntou o pai, articulando bem as palavras. - Não! - rosnou Leo em resposta. - Então tenha orgulho daquilo que você é - aconselhou o pai. - Afinal de contas, todo o mundo é diferente de todas as demais pessoas. Mas o conselho de Paulo ao jovem Timóteo foi além do conselho que o pai de Leo deu a seu filho. Sendo um modelo de cristão, podemos conquistar o respeito alheio.
